Is Your Home Prepared for a Disaster?

Published on 09/01/2012

Recent rainy weather in Coolangatta Tweed should serve as a reminder to the local community that it’s time to make sure our homes are prepared for the storm/wet season.

Weather forecasters are predicting significant rainfall for the rest of December, and on the few days that we’re expected to have a reprieve it’s a good idea to clean up the garden, trim back trees and clear away any debris.

While cleaning up your property is important, it is also important to make sure you know the weather-related risks that pertain to your property and that you are prepared for any possible risks.
Here are some points to consider:

•    Do you know the risks of heavy rainfall and flooding around your property?
•    Does your household have an emergency plan in case of a severe weather event?
•    Do you have an emergency kit on standby?
•    Do you stay alert to the local weather by tuning into local radio stations or keeping an eye on weather websites such as www.bom.gov.au?
•    Are you ready to move furniture off the ground, sandbag or evacuate your home if necessary?

To find out more about the points mentioned above you might like to read about preparing your home for a potential disaster at www.disaster.qld.gov.au. Another useful resource is  www.emergencyvolunteering.com.au, where you can take a quick questionnaire to find out how well prepared you are for a disaster.

Hopefully there are no serious weather events in Coolangatta Tweed or anywhere else this year, but it is always a good idea to be prepared just in case.
